Welcome Back JMU!  And welcome to campus Class of 2014!

Everyone here in UPB hopes you had an amazing and relaxing summer!   However, we are looking forward to an even better semester ahead!  This Fall, we are bringing many exciting programs your way:  from comedians and motivational speakers to blockbuster movies and concert series, this semester’s events are going to be better than ever!  That being said, here’s a look at whats happening on the JMU Campus this week:

 Crazy Commons

Welcome “Back to School with Jimmy Madison” this Tuesday from 11 AM to 2 PM in the Commons.   This is the first Crazy Commons of Fall 2010!  Enjoy free food, gifts, and sneak peeks of upcoming events for the fall semester.  And make sure you don’t miss the announcement of our Fall Concert Series!

 

 

 

Accents Tour 2010

The Accents Tour 2010 is a uniquely designed music series showcasing rising European and Australian artists on the verge of international success!  Performing at Festival Drum Thursday September 2nd at 8 pm is Via Tania, Freddie Stevenson, and JMU’s own Trinity Edralin.

 

Funny Freakin Friday

Mike E Winfield is one of today’s fastest rising comedy stars.  He has been featured on shows like Showtime’s Comedians Without Borders, and Last Comic Standing on NBC. His story-telling comic style and cutting jokes about his own “big ass teeth,” easily makes him the funniest comedian alive (self-proclaimed of course).  Former Breeze humor-columnist, Michael Larrick will open the show followed by Mike E Winfield!  Come out and …catch a laugh in TDU on September 3rd at 8 PM!  And don’t forget…it’s FREE!

Looking Through Broken Glass

For National Eating Disorders Awareness Month UPB, SWO, and the sisters of Sigma Sigma Sigma are bringing speaker Stacey Prussman to campus this Monday. Stacey is a professional stand-up comedian, actress, and motivational speaker. Her presentation tells the personal story of her battle with eating disorders and how she struggled to overcome them. This presentation is brutally honest, with a sense of humor and discusses the media’s influence and the “smoke and mirrors” of magazines and TV.

Looking to show off your skills on the Massanutten slopes? Sign up with UREC to ski Thursday nights from 4:30 to 10:30 PM this winter at a special discount.

Help support the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank while enjoying the music of three amazing bands. Eta Sigma Gamma and UPB are bringing Cicero, The Chuck Shaffer Picture Show, and The Avenue to the Festival Ballroom. The event is this Thursday at 8 PM and admission is either 2 canned food items or $2.

Funny Freakin’ Friday with Michelle Buteau

From HBO’s Aspen Comedy Festival and Last Comic Standing, Michelle Buteau will be performing her stand up for free this Friday night as part of UPB’s Funny Freakin’ Friday Series. As usual the event is from 8-9 PM in TDU.

Wong Fu Productions, one of the most influential Asian groups in the media, is comprised of three men who reach out and express their beliefs on Asian culture. They produce music and very entertaining videos, as well as spreading Asian awareness in the communities in which they visit. They will be talking to the audience about who they are and what they represent as well as sharing some of their videos and music. The event will be Tuesday from 6:00-9:30 PM in Grafton.

Advanced Screening of The Fourth KindThe Fourth Kind
Our on-campus movie theater is getting a special advanced screening of the thrilling and very scary The Fourth Kind starring Milla Jovovich. The events in the film are based on the true events surrounding one psychologist’s investigations into one remote area’s claims of alien activity. The film is open to 400 JMU students for free, so make sure to come by the UPB office to pick up your pass before the show Wednesday at 10:00 PM.

His multicultural background inspires many hilarious rants and this Friday is sure to be a night that will leave your sides hurting from laughing so hard.

Even if you aren’t already a lord of the dance LDC will be teaching salsa, merengue, and bachata. The event is completely free and promises to be a night you’ll remember!

The Matinee Film for November is already a cult classic. Grafton will remind you of a day at the beach with the decorations for this month’s installment of the Matinee Film Series (who doesn’t love beach balls?). Rumble Down UnderRumble Down Under
The second annual Rumble Down Under is back! Come see ten of the best bands around JMU battle it out this Thursday, October 22 in TDU. The event starts at 7 PM and each of the artists get a 15 minute set to impress the audience and judges. The competition this year consists of Stay at Home Greg, Luke Hartman, The Last Kings, Lights in the Fog, James Orrigo, Grant Thomas, The Sun Kings, Andrew Rohlk, Yesterday’s Heros, and Whiskers and the Sly Racoon. Last year’s winner Joshua Vana will also be performing during the judge’s deliberation. Look out for the the top band”s own concert put on by UPB this November.

Come by Festival this Thursday night from 10 PM to 12 AM for the Disney themed Late Night Breakfast! Not only will there be free food, but there are also balloon and caricature artists, a roaming magician, and Disney Scene-It and trivia! There will be classic Disney movies as prizes, so come prepared. Trust me on this one, I consider myself to be a master of Disney trivia – and these questions are tough. As if all this wasn’t enough, there is also going to be a contest to see who can design the best LNB series t-shirt.
